If you keep up with Qualcomm’s product launches, you can probably figure out what the Snapdragon 8 Elite represents right from its name. If not, a quick history lesson. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors have powered a huge selection of Android phones around the globe, and since 2013, the vast majority of flagships have included chips from the company’s 800-series. In 2021, in an attempt to streamline its naming structure, Qualcomm delivered the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, followed by two successors, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
Mobile device manufacturers will now be using this chipset to bring new flagship devices to the market. It has now been confirmed that Samsung will indeed be one of the companies that launches Snapdragon 8 Elite-powered devices in the coming months.
With the new Oryon CPU core, Qualcomm says to expect the Snapdragon 8 Elite to show improvements with a 45% increase in both single-core and multi-core performance and a whopping 62% improvement in web browsing. The AP has shown a 40% hike in Gaming performance and a 35% improvement in RayTracing. The latter is used to show the path of light in a game including how the light interacts with objects in a scene. The bottom line? More realistic reflections, refractions, and shadows in mobile games. Speaking of gaming, the chip delivers up to 2.5 more hours of battery life for game play.
This year, Qualcomm has completely ditched efficiency cores. Its 8-core Oryon CPU combines two prime cores running at a whopping 4.32GHz with six performance cores clocked at 3.53GHz. Despite the massive shift in architecture, Qualcomm says this new CPU is 44 percent more power efficient than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Basically, the Snapdragon 8 Elite is designed to deliver faster performance for practically any task without sacrificing battery life, though we’ll have to wait until devices running this chip are in the wild to put that to the test.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite’s AI ISP (Image Signal Processor) is deeply integrated with the Hexagon NPU for enhanced, intuitive capture. Other photography-related features with the chip’s ISP include the use of Insight AI to enhance natural skin and sky tones even in the most challenging conditions. The Video Object Eraser can remove unwanted elements from your videos right on-device. With the ISP, you’ll be able to capture vivid videos at 4K60 FPS, even if you are almost in the dark.
